Why Did my Child’s SLP Recommend a Hearing Test?

Child getting hearing test

It’s common for Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) to recommend a hearing test – but why?  We explain the connection between hearing and speech development and why this is an important step in the therapy process below.

The Link Between Hearing and Speech

Hearing plays a crucial role in how children learn to speak and understand language. When a child has difficulty hearing, they miss out on hearing the sounds that make up language. This can lead to challenges in understanding language, vocabulary development and speech development, as well as reading, school success and social skills.

Why an SLP Might Recommend a Hearing Test

If an SLP notices that a child is struggling with speech sounds (articulation), or language comprehension (responding to name, following directions, answering questions), they will likely suggest a hearing evaluation to rule out hearing issues as a contributing factor. Even mild hearing loss can affect how a child learns to speak and understand language.

In the event that your child is experiencing hearing loss, early detection and intervention are key to getting your child back on track with speech & language skill development.

What to Expect from a Hearing Test

A hearing test is a painless, non-invasive, and straightforward procedure that assesses how well your child can hear different sounds. Depending on your child’s age and development, the test might involve inserting probes (like a foam earplug or earbud) into the child’s ears, listening to sounds through headphones or observing their responses to sounds in a soundproof room.

In Ontario, you can access hearing tests by obtaining a referral from your child’s primary care physician or by self-referring to a private audiologist. You can use the “Find a Registered Professional” found at https://caslpo.com search for an Audiologist near you.

Moving Forward

If the hearing test reveals that your child has hearing issues, the next steps will depend on the nature and extent of the hearing loss. This could involve hearing aids, medical treatment, or other interventions. Addressing hearing problems early can make a significant difference in your child’s speech and language development.

In summary, a hearing test recommended by your child’s SLP is an important step in ensuring that any potential hearing issues are identified and addressed. By addressing hearing concerns, you can support your child’s overall communication development and set them up for success in their speech and language journey.
